CORPO FRUTTIFERO:
altezza 6-12 cm, larghezza 1-1,5 cm. Specie il cui corpofrottifero, sul lungo gambo da bianco puro ad arancio sporco, emerge da una struttura ad uovo dotata di un tegumento cuoioso; bianco puro. L’apice, color arancio, si confonde col gambo stesso.
SPORE:
verde oliva e viscide, dall’odore fetido, che attrae gli insetti utili alla diffusione, ricoprono l’apice.
HABITAT:
spessi strati di foglie o aghi, attorno a ceppi marcescenti, nei boschi. Comune in Europa.
SPECIE SIMILI:
M. ravenellii, originario del Nord America ma diffuso anche in Europa, dove preferisce parchi e giardini, ha gambo rosso. Phallus impudicus e le specie imparentate presentano cappelli caratteristici all’apice del gambo.
